Accessibility of the Night on the Island of Culture
We want as many people as possible to experience the Night on the Island of Culture. We do our best to remove barriers wherever we can and to give you enough information in advance, so you can choose the programme and plan your evening to suit your needs.
We work with the Accessibility Alliance, set up as part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2028. It is an advisory body made up of people with their own experience of disability and of the organisations that represent them. Together we go through the programme of the Night and select the events we will make accessible, for example through Czech Sign Language interpreting, audio description, assistance or other measures.
Specific measures to improve accessibility
Across the whole event we are preparing shared measures that make planning and visiting easier:
- an accessible website and clear information about the programme
- structured pre-visit guides for every venue, so you know in advance what awaits you at each place
- a map with the information that matters for moving between the venues
- an information centre during the Night
- trained volunteers who will help with orientation and assistance on site
- the clearest possible wayfinding and signage across the Island of Culture
Accessible events
For selected events we are preparing specific accessibility tools according to the character of the event and the needs of visitors.
These will include, for example:
- Czech Sign Language (ČZJ) interpreting
- audio description
- assistance on site
- reserved spaces for wheelchair users
- the option to sit down and rest
- a calmer event or space
- information about sensory intensity
- the option to leave an event and come back
We will publish the specific accessible events and the available measures directly in the programme of the Night as they are confirmed.
How to find a programme that suits your needs
Every event comes with specific accessibility information. You will be able to filter the programme, for example by the physical accessibility of the venue or by the accessibility tools available.
We are also preparing suggestions for putting together a whole evening with similar accessibility conditions — for example only events with audio description, Czech Sign Language or good physical accessibility. At the same time we want to keep the option of discovering the Island entirely your own way.
Accessibility of individual venues
Every building has different conditions. For the participating institutions you will therefore find practical information, for example about:
- accessible entrances and movement inside the building
- stairs, ramps and lifts
- accessible toilets
- places to sit and rest
- parking and getting there by public transport
- other available services and any barriers
Getting between venues
The Night on the Island of Culture is not only the programme inside the individual buildings. We want you to be able to explore the whole cultural quarter safely and as easily as possible during the evening.
That is why we are preparing a map of the Island of Culture with practical information for moving between the venues, distances, accessible routes and warnings about barriers in public space. During the Night, trained volunteers will also help with orientation.
One shared experience
We pay particular attention to the main shared moments of the Night. For the evening audiovisual show in the festival zone between the South Bohemian Museum, KD Slavie and the South Bohemian Theatre we are arranging audio description, well-placed spaces for wheelchair users, the option of assistance, an accessible route and advance information about light, sound, intensity and the length of the programme.
