Map of the Island of Culture

The Island of Culture is a new cultural quarter taking shape in České Budějovice. It connects twelve cultural institutions – theatres, galleries, museums, cultural centres and more. All of them have long worked together on a varied programme for locals and for visitors from the wider region.

We will try out how the new cultural quarter works together for the first time at this year's first edition of the Night on the Island of Culture festival. Next year it will be part of the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture (ECoC). But the prestigious title is not only about one exceptional year full of cultural events. The Island of Culture will remain part of České Budějovice beyond 2028.

The purpose of a connected cultural quarter is to use culture as a tool for the long-term development of the city, support for local communities, closer cooperation between institutions and greater openness of the city towards its residents, people from the region and visitors from all over the world.

How did the first Night on the Island of Culture go?

We are testing how shared programming, visitor orientation, movement between institutions, work with public space and joint communication of the cultural quarter can work. Leave us your feedback, so we know what worked and what we should improve to make the opening of ECoC 2028 as good as it can be.
